About the website lab

The website-lab was started by Martin Dunn and Thomas Lloyd at the end of 2008. Since then we have developed websites for a wide range of clients. We are based in an office on the Newcastle quayside and offer an affordable, personal service for your website needs. Due to Martin’s obsession with code, we offer a great range of functionality with our websites. We do not want to baffle you with jargon though, just assess your needs, and produce a tailored solution.

We are very pleased to reveal our very first ecommerce website! DKNW Toys is a specialist Toyshop selling a wide range of kids toys and games. Previously they sold their products through an Amazon market place however they decided to expand to run their own website.

The site features an extremely comprehensive set of Content Management Features that enable the administrator to have full control over their stock.

This however is not the end of this project. We are continuing to work closely with our client to tweak and improve the site, continually adding new features that will enhance the experience for the end user as well as the shop manager.

We have recently made some updates to the Gateshead Drugs information website. Unfortunately all the changes are on the staff only part of the website, so you will just have to enjoy my description.

Anyway, after gathering feedback from Gateshead PCT staff that use the site, it was decided that it would be useful to have an online noticeboard. This would be a place where any member of staff could post useful information for other people to view. Once posted, all registered staff members will receive and email to let them know that there is a new notice been posted, who posted it, and what it is about.

It was also requested that we hosted on the site the informational DVD that would be useful for all staff to have easy access too.

We have recently re-developed our site. It might not look different but there's been some big changes! We are now using the lightweight, MVC framework, CodeIgniter which I can't speak more highly of! If you're new to the concept of MVC programming or think it's time to get into developing your application with frameworks try out CI and you wont be disappointed. Our site loads roughly 100% faster now.

After having a play around with the OpenCart API and developing some test projects, I came across as very small bug in this already great open source shopping cart. The bug caused a problem with a form element value. After fixing it up, we got in contact with OpenCart and let them know! The bug should be fixed with the next release of OpenCart!
